UPPER SHORE WORKFORCE INVESTMENT BOARD MEETING

FEBRUARY 21, 2002  

 

Meeting was called to order at 5:15 p.m.  

ATTENDEES

Board members in attendance were Beverly Birkmire, Bob Brannock, George Brittingham, Gil Cephas, Susan Cianchetta, Jane Conlin, Russ Carlow, William Ditman, Hoyt Heinmuller, Stan Hutchinson, Dave McIntire, John Pyle, Royce Sampson, Dale Spencer, Charlie Sommers, and George Weeks.  Others in attendance were Pat Baker, Vicki Busesgens, Glorya Cowley, Dan McDermott, Brenda Marzucco, Melissa Mackey, and Teresa Stafford  

NEW MEMBERS

Dan introduced Russ Carlow from Kent County, and William Ditman from Talbot County.  Both gentlemen are representing the private sector on the Board.

MINUTES

Motion made by Charlie Sommers and seconded by George Brittingham to accept minutes from the November 27, 2001 meeting as written.  Motion carried by all.  

REGIONAL NON-TRADITIONAL HIGH SCHOOL FEASIBILTY STUDY

Vicki Busgens of S.H.I.F.T.S. returned to give the Board a brief review in regards to if this program would be feasible for this area.  George Weeks suggested that the information given verbally and handed out by Vicki, be assigned to the Youth Council to wade through the issued in depth, and report it’s opinions at the next Board meeting.  

MOBILE TRAINING UNIT

After reviewing a rough draft of the RFP, a discussion ensued as to what additional items should or should not be included in the RFP that will be going out in January 2002.  Motion made by Jane Conlin and seconded by Bob Brannock for the Board to give Dan McDermott approval to release RFP and award contract.  All carried motion.  

TEMP. ASSISTANCE FOR NEEDY FAMILIES REAUTHORIZATION

Motion was made by Bob Brannock, seconded by George Brittingham that the WIB should consider supporting the reauthorization of the TANF and take action in the form of a letter of support.  The letter should be sent to Senators Sarbanes and Mikulski and Congressman Gilchrest and should be signed by the WIB President.  All carried motion.  

OTHER ISSUES

Dan McDermott presented a short summary of the activities on the grants being worked on that are not funded by the Workforce Investment Board.  The Regional Transportation Coordination Initiative funded by the MTA, the Sectorial Formation Initiative funded by the Department of Labor, and the Community Audit funded by the Department of Labor.  

Meeting was adjourned at 7:00 p.m.
